Wola Plants
THE RESULTS OF A SURVEY OF THE COMPOSITION OF PLANT COMMUNITIES IN THE HIGHLANDS OF PAPUA NEW GUINEA.
The following tables report the results of a survey of the composition of plant communities in the Southern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea. They contain the data reported on in a paper entitled ‘An ethnobotanical account of the vegetation communities of the Wola region, Southern Highlands Province, Papua New Guinea’ published in the Journal of Ethnobiology volume 18, number 1. This paper on the vegetation communities distinguished by the Wola people of the Southern Highlands is part of an ethnobotanical series. A previous companion paper on their botanical taxonomic scheme was published in the Journal of Ethnobiology volume. 15, number 2.
The tables are arranged according to the vegetation communities identified by the Wola, just as the accounts of vegetational ecology in the paper are structured around the successions named by them.. They identify nine vegetation types, with a further four sub-types, ranging from climax montane forest to seral communities of grassland, as follows:
· iyshabuw: lower montane rainforest
· pa: wetland vegetation
· haenbora: rocky vegetation
· yom: alpine vegetation
· way bway: cultivated vegetation, comprising two locales:
– em : gardens
– aend bort (or aendtay): houseyard environs
. mokombai: recently abandoned garden successions, including two sub-types:
– taengbiyp: pioneer herbaceous regrowth
– bol: later coarse grass regrowth
· gaimb: cane grass regrowth
· obael: secondary forest regrowth
· pletbok: thicket (which may occur at locales within some of the above vegetational successions (notably iyshabuw, yom, gaimb and obael), and relates more to density of plant growth than species composition or land use).
The species composition of these communities was found to range from 18 to 174. There is a broad correspondence between the local and scientific identification of the ecological zones, which these quantitative data reinforce. The Wola speak about the vegetational communities on disturbed land comprising an anthropogenic series of varying composition and species richness that relates to the unaltered forest community, and the tables are presented according to this presumed ecological succession.
The composition of these communities was investigated in a series of quadrat surveys, recording plant species present. The surveys were conducted in the Was (Wage) river valley region of the Southern Highlands Province. Information was first accumulated on the indicator species and floristic structure which the Wola look for in discriminating between named successions. The survey was conducted after the ethnographer was familiar with the plant communities distinguished by the Wola following many visits to different locales where people described the successions, relating the distinctive composition and diagnostic floristic features of plant communities as they saw them. A series of quadrat surveys was then conducted to gather quantifiable data on the composition of the various successions (Kershaw 1973; Kent & Coker 1992).
The data are recorded in the following tables, covering each of the different vegetational communities. These tables are arranged according to Wola categories of growth form (woody plants, vines, tree ferns etc.), and alphabetically by botanical families within each of these categories. They include the Wola name for the plants, together with their species and genera identifications. These have been substantiated by vouchers, annotated reference exsiccatae being deposited at several herbaria (see Sillitoe, 1995), upon which determinations depended, together with some use of available monographic keys. I relied heavily upon my Wola friends’ knowledge of their region’s flora in making discriminations.
The dimensions of the areas surveyed varied, as indicated at the head of each table, according to the size of the vegetation comprising the communities. Where the vegetation included some very large plants (iyshabuw montane forest, obael secondary woodland and gaimb cane grassland), ten metre square quadrats were marked out using a surveyor’s tape, and all of the plants occurring in the demarcated area were counted, excluding fungi and mosses. Where the plants were smaller (em gardens, mokombai abandoned gardens, haenbora rockland and pa swampland communities), one metre square portable frames were used, thrown at random in the locations surveyed, and all plants that grew within the area delimited by the squares counted. When the frames tipped sideways or caught in shrubbery in dense vegetation, we moved plant stems where possible to even them up, or if they were too robust for this, undid one corner of the frame to encompass them. The larger 100m2 sites, like those in the forest, were selected at random, using two random numbers per site, to determine compass direction and distance in paced meters from the last site surveyed to the next one. The survey starting points were selected by pointing blind fold at a map of the region.
