Note that his catalogue is arranged according to how the tools were used (as recorded in field notes); many of the tools could have been used for other tasks instead. The catalogue does not represent the Wola classification of chert tools, which is minimal in comparison. The collective term for flake tools is aeray ‘chert’. The only distinctions people make are between pointed flakes suitable for boring holes, called aeray wil hae (lit: chert nose stands); small tools suitable for shaving down strands of rattan, called tomaep aeray (lit: Calamus sp. chert); and small flakes mounted in makeshift handles called aeray habuwk lay (lit: chert split-handle hit). Persons infrequently make these distinctions in speech however, calling all tools simply aeray.
